if I wore a sign

...or posted one on my stroller, it would say...

* Yes, they are twins
* A boy and a girl
* 13 months [or current age]
* Um, my cousin has twins [which has nothing to do with my twins, but do we really need to go into how they don't always run in the family?]
* We'll see [in response to "boy, girl, you're done!"]
* Oh really [or] that's great [or] I'm glad they survived [in response to hearing about all the people they know who have twins]

And then on the flip side I'd have it translated into Spanish.

Having my mom here with me has made me realize (again) how often we have this conversation when we go out! I feel a bit like a spectacle sometimes, like I'm parading my twins around on a platter, but I do love how people are so sweet, friendly, and seem genuinely happy to see the babies.

One thing we hear probably more than anything, is "God bless them." Is this is a New York thing, or a Washington Heights thing, or a Dominican thing? I don't know, I've only ever had babies here. But everyone says it! Old ladies, teenagers, middle-aged men. I'm not sure what the proper response is, but I always try to smile or say "thank you." Guess I'd better add that to my sign.

Anyway, either someone is spying on me, or every mom of twins has the same deal, because this video is spot on...

I've even been asked if the twins are "natural." My response (later, to Jared only) is always "they are not robots." Haha.

New Yorkers, God bless them.

  1. Oh my gosh, just seeing how people coo over a single baby on the subway I can only IMAGINE the stuff you hear on a daily basis!

    And yes, while I don't have a babe yet, I've heard this "bless you/him/her/them" thing all over. I think it might be a Dominican thing? Actually I've heard it from some of "those" guys on the corner, so yeah, I'm going to go ahead and say it's a Dominican thing.

    I'm thinking you should seriously make onesies that say "Yeah, I'm a twin." and see what people say.

  2. God bless you is totally a NY thing (or our 'hood thing). I lived in the bible belt and never heard it.

    You are a-freaking-mazing!

    Can you add. "I'm natural this thin and good looking." Because everyone is looking are your flat stomach wondering how this all working out.

  3. I MISS hearing "God bless her" all the time. Definitely a NY/Washington Heights thing...which probably means its a dominican thing. I remember how much attention Sass-a-frass got in NY and I loved it. We were a little miffed when we got to Utah and we were like "Why is no one paying any attention to my baby??" One reason I LOVED becoming a mom in NYC.

    God Bless you guys.

  8. Whether it's Dominican, the Heights, or just New Yorkers in general I LOVE IT. To inquire, then coo, and finally care to depart with "God bless them" is so warm and comforting, it totally cancels out other negative talk I've ever heard about people on a NY street being too busy or driven to give you the time of day when you're a visitor there. If Deanne is anything like this grandma, she was beaming ear-to-ear from all the attention those two darling babies attract like magnets. By my experience, people love a good love story, and I [HEART] New York!

  9. I bet you've heard it all. Those two are show stoppers, there's no doubt about it! I'm with everyone else- that video was amazing. Now I'm racking my brain trying to remember if I've asked you any of those ridiculous questions!

  10. That was hilarious! Your family is so cute and I can't believe how grown-up your babies are getting. I forgot about the whole "God bless you" thing and I totally miss it! I think it is a WaHi thing. No one ever says it here in Philly. People either A.) ignore my kids entirely B.) Just look and smile or C.) Look and tell me how crazy my life must be. I miss the "God bless you."
